Engineering
BTEC 1ST CERTIFICATE IN ENGINEERING
This is a nationally recognised vocational qualification which is accepted by all further education establishments, universities and employers.
The engineering course is a BTEC 1st certificate qualification. It is equivalent to a 2x GCSE award.
There are only twelve places available on this course, so you may have to be interviewed for a place.
The course involves three units of study:
A - Fundamentals of CAD
B - Electronics Principles
C - Workshop theory and practice
Students taking this course will be expected to complete some of the work in school and some of the work at Middlesbrough College.
Ideally this course is suitable for those students who have an interest in engineering and who may wish to follow a career in engineering.
Progression:
It is possible to follow on from this course at college after leaving Ormesby. It provides a good Engineering 'grounding' for many related courses and modern apprenticeships.
Students will have the opportunity to work on computer-aided design programmes..
They will also visit work places to observe how the engineering process works in the real world.
All 3 units of this double award course are examined by coursework.
There are no end examinations.
GCSE DOUBLE AWARD IN ENGINEERING
This course is delivered in partnership with NETA, it is worth 2 x GCSEs at A* - C grades
The award is assessed in 3 units:
Unit 1 = Design and Graphical Communication.
Pupils design a product to meet a need (coursework).
Unit 2 = Making an Engineering product.
Pupils make a product following a set of Engineering drawings (coursework).
Unit 3 = Application of a New Technology.
This is a 1½ hour examination, looking at modern manufacturing principles.
All 3 units are worth 1/3 of the award.
Pupils must know that this is an academic course involving workshop theory and practise. It is not a motor vehicle qualification and the pupils who do well on this course are the higher academic achievers.
One afternoon per week will be spent at NETA. Pupils will need to work until 4.45pm for this session at NETA in Billingham.
NETA is an Engineering Training provider specialising in apprenticeships in Engineering disciplines.
The skills taught on this course include engineering drawing, CAD, Electronics, Design and also some Engineering Workshop Theory and Practices.
