Welcome to the Engineering Faculty

Head of Engineering : Mr P Tilson

As a Specialist college the importance of Engineering in the school curriculum should not be underestimated. Given the pace of technological change and the increasing role of technology at work and in the home, it is essential that students leave Ormesby informed and comfortable with Engineering in its various forms.

In the same way that industry tackles design problems using 'teams' of specialists drawn from different areas, Ormesby encourages a cross-curricular approach to the teaching and learning of Engineering in school.

Engineering is taught to all pupils at Key Stage 3 as part of the design technology curriculum. At Key Stage 4 students have a broad curriculum to choose from, BTECs in Construction, Engineering and Hospitality are offered along with the new National Engineering Diploma. Throughout Key Stage 4, pupils are engaged in solving design tasks and making products, whilst learning about the properties of the materials they are using and the wider implications of new designs and their manufacture. Pupils are actively encouraged to use ICT, and an understanding of CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Manufacture) is part of the National Curriculum at KS4. The use of ICT is a requirement of GCSE coursework.

KeyStage 3
In key stage 3, students work on a number of projects which develop their understanding of tools, materials, sketching and making techniques. Whilst doing this they learn how to interact with each other and solve problems. They also gain an understanding of what is involved in Food, Resistant Materials, Graphics, Electronics and Engineering which will help them select their options in Year 9.
