GCSE Sports Studies
This course has a high self-learning content and a high ICT content. Students have to complete 6 units of work over the years. Assessment is continual, and externally moderated. The Junior Sports Leaders Award is included in this course.
Increasing independence occurs as pupils take on more responsibility for their actions, eventually becoming able to take part in planning, performing and evaluating their own activity programmes or elements of them. This
independence should help them continue with Physical Education in some form after leaving school.
At this level pupils will interact with larger groups and increasingly assume guided
responsibility for leading warm-up sessions, devising tasks and evaluating the work of
others.
These experiences will be drawn from a range of activities during both lesson and
extra-curricular time, and will involve;-
- soccer
- netball
- hockey
- volleyball
- athletics
- trampoline
- outdoor activities
The discipline and diversification of these traditional activities will provide the solid framework needed to pursue a more relaxed leisure programme in Year 11.
As pupils progress through the school there will be a number of personal challenges designed to fully extend the students both physically and mentally.
These form part of the Department’s extensive extra-curricular programme.
BTEC FIRST DIPLOMA IN SPORT - (4 X A - C)
This course is 100% continual assessment coursework based. No written exam.
It also has a high self learning content. All coursework must be word processed, so pupils opting for this course must have a high level of skill in ICT, i.e confident in
using programmes like power point.
Students have to complete 6 units of work over the 2 year course. Failure to complete units of work by deadline date means failure of course.
Three units of work are theory based and students cover a topic such as:
- Preparation for sport
- The body in sport
- Health and safety in sport
Three units of work are practical:
- Sailing and canoeing. Students must be prepared to go sailing and canoeing once per week until the minimum standard is achieved. (Sailing = Royal Yachting
Association level 2 and Canoeing = British Canoe Union level 2.
- Expedition. Students plan and carry out a three day/two night Canoe based water expedition, under full supervision. (They cannot do this until they have achieved the level 2 canoeing).
- Sports Performer. Here they must be able to perform to a high level in a sport of their choice and analyse performance by others in their chosen sport.
This course is a pathway to BTEC Higher National Diploma, which can be followed at 6th form college.
