Religious Education

Roden ThinkerAll students in Ormesby School study Religious Education. In Key Stage 3 this is within the Humanities Faculty.

In R.E students need to be able to engage in careful and reflective thought. Thinking goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge.

In Key Stage 3 students look at the following topics;

  1. Community- considering how people are welcomed into various faith communities
    Baptism
  2. Christmas - religious or secular
  3. EasterSome aspects of the life of Jesus and there relevance today -Did he exist ? Miracles -do they prove the existence of God? Disciples-considering aspects of friendship, support, betrayal , The Death and Resurrection of Jesus and the impact of those events both at the time and today
  4. Racism- the impact of putting faith into action- The life of Martin Luther King and his legacy for today
  5. Religious Buildings Use and Symbolism
  6. Gods and Symbols
    Gods and Symbols
  7. Belief
  8. Prayer
  9. Charity
    Christian Aid
  10. Pilgrimage
    Kaaba
  11. Creation Stories
  12. Law
  13. The Problem of Suffering with specific reference to the Holocaust Auschwitz

During Year 9 we start the G.C.S.E syllabus so that students have the opportunity to gain a Full G.C.S.E at the end of Year 11 this means taking one exam in Year 10 and adding another one in Year 11. There is no coursework in R.E.

Course 1
The following issues will be studied

  1. Social Responsibility -how decisions are made, the voting system, The Welfare State
  2. Religion and the Environment-problems in the natural world, stewardship ,why and how religious people look after the natural world

  4. Crime and Punishment
    Crime and Punishment
  5. Medical Issues - Transplant surgery, Genetic Engineering
    Medical Issues

These issues will be examined from both social and religious perspectives.

Students will take an exam looking at the above issues at the end of Year 10.
In Year 11 the following issues will be studied;

1. Marriage and Family Life -looking at relationships, the purpose of marriage, Wedding Ceremonies, divorce and the role of the family.

3. Matters of Life and Death-Abortion, Euthanasia and Life after Death

4. Social Harmony- Racism, Roles of Women, Multi-Faith and Multi-Ethnic Societies

5. Belief in God - Arguments for and against the existence of God and the Problem of Suffering.

This exam may then be added to the exam taken in Year 10 and students will gain a Full G.C.S.E.
