Science

Science is a core subject which all pupils study from Year 7 to 11.

All Science courses are challenging and encourage pupils to:

  • Gain a knowledge and understanding of science theory.
  • Develop experimental and investigative abilities.
  • Appreciate how science is applied in everyday life, including aspects of
  • Information Communication Technology.

Pupils study Science for either 6 or 4 periods per week and a high level of
commitment is required.

Pupils could take the following courses in KS4 depending upon their Key Stage 3 results:

  • GCSE Triple Science (3 GCSEs)
  • GCSE Core & Additional Science (2 GCSEs)
  • BTEC in Applied Science (1, 2 or 4 GCSE equivalents)

The GCSE courses are assessed by module examinations, an ideas in context examination and a skills controlled assessment unit.

The BTEC course is assessed by portfolio. (There is no final examination).

News
Over the last few months KS4 pupils have been completing Practical Assessments for GCSE courses. These assessments count towards the final grade. These assessments will be continuing over the next few months.

The Science Department has been using Kaleidos to set homework and some coursework for pupils. This means that pupils can complete homework and communicate with staff out of hours or during any free time they have in school. Look for the homework assignments and marks on your child’s account.

In KS4 homework is being set online using the 21csciencehomework.com website.

Towards the end of last term 4 pupils from different year groups took part in a Top of the Bench Quiz hosted at Nunthorpe School.  A good time was had by all. Another group of pupils will be representing the school in the Summer Term.
